Dear Parents and Guardians,
I hope this letter finds you well. As part of our dedication to providing a quality education for our students, we include the Cambridge Lower Secondary Math, English and Science Progression Tests in our curriculum. These tests are a crucial component of assessing our students' understanding and skills in each of these learning areas. Below, we outline the components of these tests in simple terms to ensure you're fully informed about what your child will experience.
Overview of Cambridge Lower Secondary Progression Tests:
These tests are teacher-marked assessments tailored for students in Grades 6 to 8.
They can be administered at any point during the school year, offering flexibility in assessing student progress.
It is up to the teacher's discretion to use the test as a summative assessment in MS.
Math Progression Test Components:
Test Structure:
Grades 6 to 8: Paper 1 and Paper 2: Each paper is 60 minutes long and is worth 50 marks, totaling 100 marks for both papers.
Important: The use of a calculator is allowed only in Paper 2.
Assessment Focus:
The tests feature a variety of question types, including numerical answers, labeling diagrams, multiple choice, graphical, and matching items.
Questions cover content relevant to the corresponding grade of the Math curriculum and may revisit concepts from previous grade levels to assess consolidation.
Skills in "Thinking and Working Mathematically" are evaluated throughout the tests, with all questions being compulsory.
Content Coverage: The tests aim to provide a comprehensive assessment across various areas of mathematics:
Number: Ranges from 17% to 25%, decreasing as students' progress through.
Algebra: Increases from 18% in Grade 6 to 26% in Grade 8.
Geometry and Measure: Consistently around 22% to 24%.
Statistics and Probability: Remains steady at 13% to 15%.
Thinking and Working Mathematically: Accounts for 20%, emphasizing critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
English Progression Test Components:
Test Structure:
For Grades 6 to 8:
Paper 1 (Non-fiction): 1 hour and 10 minutes, worth 50 marks.
Paper 2 (Fiction): 1 hour and 10 minutes, also worth 50 marks.
Total: Each stage has a total of 100 marks available.
Assessment Focus:
The tests encompass a variety of question types, including short answers and multiple-choice questions, to assess a broad range of English skills.
An extended writing task in each paper evaluates writing skills, with all questions being compulsory to ensure a comprehensive assessment.
Note: Speaking and Listening skills are not directly assessed in these tests.
Content Coverage: The tests are designed to evenly assess both reading and writing skills, with each component accounting for 50% of the total marks across all stages.
Reading: Focuses on students' ability to understand and interpret non-fiction and fiction texts.
Writing: Assesses students' capabilities in composing coherent and structured responses.
Science Progression Test Components:
Test Structure:
For Grades 6 to 8:
Paper 1: 45 minutes, worth 50 marks.
Paper 2: 45 minutes, worth 50 marks.
Total: 100 marks across both papers.
Assessment Focus:
A variety of question types are used, including short answers and multiple-choice questions, to assess a broad spectrum of scientific knowledge.
Tests evaluate students' understanding in Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Earth and space, and their ability to think and work scientifically.
Please note, Science in Context learning objectives are not assessed in these tests.
Content Coverage: The tests aim to provide a balanced assessment across different scientific disciplines:
Biology: 20%
Chemistry: 20%
Physics: 20%
Earth and space: 15%
Thinking and working scientifically: 25%
We believe that these progression tests play a vital role in identifying areas of strength and areas for improvement in our students' understanding of these subjects. They guide our instructional strategies to better support each student's learning journey.
Your support in preparing your child for these assessments is invaluable. Should you have any questions or require further details, please do not hesitate to reach out.
Thank you for your ongoing support of your child's educational development.
Warm regards,
