  • Week 2 – What Dyslexia Is (and Isn’t)

Image credit: @ slpguidetodyslexia on Instagram The Yale Center for Dyslexia & Creativity defines dyslexia as an “unexpected difficulty in reading” in children and adults who have the intelligence to be much stronger readers. Dyslexia primarily stems from challenges with phonological processing —the ability to connect sounds with written letters and words. This can make decoding new words, spelling, and reading fluency difficult. Students with dyslexia may also struggle with memory for names, dates, or sequences. It’s important to know: Dyslexia is not related to effort or motivation. Dyslexia is not tied to intelligence —many students with dyslexia are highly capable and creative thinkers. With the right support, children with dyslexia can and do become confident readers and learners. Our school uses structured phonics instruction, audiobooks, and technology tools to help students access learning. 👉 Learn more here: Yale Center for Dyslexia & Creativity In support of this awareness, the Student Support Services Team also prepared informative Dyslexia Awareness Boards for you to visit. When you are next in the school building, please take a moment to stop by and learn more about dyslexia, including facts, strategies, and resources for supporting children. You can find the Dyslexia Awareness Boards on the 1 st  and 4 th  Floor. At SPH Kemang Village, we believe every child is made uniquely and wonderfully by God. Just as each student has their own unique gifts, they also have a unique way of learning. We are committed to understanding these differences and providing a supportive environment so every student can flourish in their learning journey.

  • Week 1 – Myth vs. Reality: Why Talk About Dyslexia?

October is Learning Disabilities Awareness Month, and we’re focusing on raising awareness of dyslexia. Dyslexia is the most common learning difference, affecting an estimated 1 in 10 children worldwide. Chances are, you know someone with dyslexia—whether a classmate, family member, or public figure. Unfortunately, myths often surround dyslexia. Some believe it means “seeing letters backwards” or that students just “need to try harder.” In reality, dyslexia is about how the brain processes written language, not motivation or intelligence. Brain scans show that dyslexic readers use different neural pathways—often drawing more from the right hemisphere of the brain. This month, we’ll share facts, strategies, and resources for families to better understand and support children with dyslexia. 👉 Test your knowledge with a quick quiz In support of this awareness, the Student Support Services Team also prepared informative Dyslexia Awareness Boards for you to visit.
