Introduction to Cambridge Primary English, Primary Math, and Science Progression Tests (#2)

I hope this message finds you in good health and spirits. As part of our ongoing dedication to providing a well-rounded and comprehensive education, we are excited to share information about the Cambridge Primary Progression Tests in English, Math, and Science. These assessments play a crucial role in evaluating your child's understanding and progress across these fundamental subjects. 


Overview of Cambridge Primary Progression Tests: 

  • These are teacher-marked assessments designed to be flexible and can be taken at any point during the school year, tailored to the specific grade your child is in (Grades 3 to 5). 

  • The tests are updated annually to ensure they reflect the most current educational standards. 

 

English Progression Test Components: 

  • Test Structure: For Grades 3-5, each student will complete two written tests, one focused on non-fiction (60 minutes, 50 marks) and the other on fiction (60 minutes, 50 marks), totaling 100 marks. 

  • Assessment Focus: Tests include short answers and multiple-choice questions, along with an extended writing task in each paper. All questions are compulsory, providing a comprehensive assessment of reading and writing abilities. 

  • Content Coverage: Reading and writing are equally assessed, with each component accounting for 50% of the total marks. 

 

Math Progression Test Components: 

  • Test Structure: 

  • Grade 3: Paper 1 and Paper 2: Each test lasts 40 minutes and is worth 30 marks, totaling 60 marks. 

  • Grade 4 and 5: Paper 1 and Paper 2: Each test lasts 45 minutes and is worth 40 marks, totaling 80 marks. 

  • Note: Use of a calculator is permitted in Grade 4 and 5 but only for Paper 2. 

  • Assessment Focus: 

  • The tests encompass a variety of question types, including numerical answers, diagram labeling, multiple choice, graphical, and matching items. 

  • Questions cover content from the corresponding grade of the Math curriculum, occasionally revisiting objectives from previous consolidated grades. 

  • "Thinking and Working Mathematically" skills are assessed throughout, with all questions being compulsory. 

  • Content Coverage: The tests aim to provide a balanced assessment across different areas of mathematics: 

  • Number: The largest portion of the test, varying from 40% to 45%. 

  • Geometry and Measure: 25% across all grades. 

  • Statistics and Probability: Increases slightly with each grade level, from 10% to 15%. 

  • Thinking and Working Mathematically: Accounts for 20%. 

 

Science Progression Test Components: 

  • Test Format: For Grade 3, each test (Paper 1 and Paper 2) is 30 minutes long with 30 marks each, totaling 60 marks. For Grades 4 and 5, each test is 35 minutes long with 40 marks each, totaling 80 marks. 

  • Content Coverage: Tests cover various strands of science, including Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Earth and Space, and Thinking and Working Scientifically, with a detailed breakdown of coverage provided for each grade. 

  • Assessment Focus: Includes a variety of question types like short answers and multiple-choice questions. Please note that "Science in Context" learning objectives are not assessed. 

 

Important Notes: 

  • Speaking and Listening skills are not assessed in the Cambridge Primary English Progression Tests. 

  • Our goal with these progression tests is to provide an accurate measure of your child's understanding and capabilities, offering insights that help us tailor our teaching methods to support their educational journey.
