Week 1 – Myth vs. Reality: Why Talk About Dyslexia?

October is Learning Disabilities Awareness Month, and we’re focusing on raising awareness of dyslexia. Dyslexia is the most common learning difference, affecting an estimated 1 in 10 children worldwide. Chances are, you know someone with dyslexia—whether a classmate, family member, or public figure.

Unfortunately, myths often surround dyslexia. Some believe it means “seeing letters backwards” or that students just “need to try harder.” In reality, dyslexia is about how the brain processes written language, not motivation or intelligence. Brain scans show that dyslexic readers use different neural pathways—often drawing more from the right hemisphere of the brain.

This month, we’ll share facts, strategies, and resources for families to better understand and support children with dyslexia.

In support of this awareness, the Student Support Services Team also prepared informative Dyslexia Awareness Boards for you to visit. When you are next in the school building, please take a moment to stop by and learn more about dyslexia, including facts, strategies, and resources for supporting children.

You can find the Dyslexia Awareness Boards on the 1st and 4th Floor.

At SPH Kemang Village, we believe every child is made uniquely and wonderfully by God. Just as each student has their own unique gifts, they also have a unique way of learning. We are committed to understanding these differences and providing a supportive environment so every student can flourish in their learning journey.
