  • Making Smart Choices: The ABCs of Responsible Decision Making

We have arrived at the final topic in the discussion of SEL and its competencies. Today’s topic will be about Responsible Decision Making and why each child should be able to make positive choices. Please continue reading to discover ways children can enhance their skills in responsible decision-making. WHY RESPONSIBLE DECISION-MAKING SKILLS IS IMPORTANT? According to Psychology Today, people make approximately 35,000 choices in a day. Options can range from small, like what to wear or eat, to big decisions, like choosing a college or accepting a job offer. Making decisions can be stressful, so it is essential to have social-emotional skills to handle them effectively. Developing these skills helps prevent hasty decisions and their potential negative consequences. Responsible decision-making also impacts time management, relationships, and overall well-being. STRATEGIES TO HELP CHILDREN LEARN RESPONSIBLE DECISION-MAKING SKILLS: According to Dr. Catlin Tucker in https://catlintucker.com/ there are five strategies we can apply to help children learn responsible decision-making skills: Co-construct Classroom Agreements (for teachers). Once the class has outlined a set of agreements, document these behavioral expectations and display them for easy reference. Collaborate to Create a Clear Path of Consequences. Unclear consequences can lead to unnecessary power struggles in the classroom. To enable students to assess potential outcomes before making decisions, it's crucial to have a precise path of consequences. Use the Urgent vs. Important Matrix to Guide Decision Making. Developing the skill to distinguish between what is essential and what is urgent is vital for students in managing their time and focusing their energy. Frayer-style Well-being Analysis. Often, students may overlook the impact of their choices on themselves and others. It is important for students reflecting on their role in promoting personal, family, and community well-being. Find the detailed explanation and example of these strategies in this link below: https://catlintucker.com/2022/08/sel-responsible-decisions/ Thank you for your enthusiastic engagement with our SEL articles. It brings us great joy to share insights about SEL that align with our practices in Learning Support. Your interest and support contribute significantly to our mission of promoting social and emotional learning. Written by: Ibu Tania (Learning Support Teacher – taniamanalu@sph.ac.id)

  • Building Good Relationship Skills at Home

For the past weeks, we have been learning about the different competencies in Social-Emotional Learning. We have talked about self-awareness, self-management & social awareness. This week’s topic is about the 4th competency: Relationship Skills. This one is closely related to social awareness. Relationship skills are one’s ability to establish and maintain healthy and supportive relationships. A person with good relationship skills can effectively navigate social settings by reading social cues and initiating conversations. This also includes listening to conversations actively, communicating with others well, cooperating, and collaborating in group work to solve problems and negotiate conflicts constructively. Greater Good in Education published an article about Social Awareness and Relationship Skills and how these two are closely related. They have listed different social awareness and relationship skills. Here is the list below: In essence, there is a strong connection between social awareness and relationship skills. For instance, when students endeavour to address a conflict in their interactions (relationship skills), the task becomes more seamless when both parties can understand and share feelings (social awareness). Parent-child relationship has an immense impact on your child’s relationship skills. After all, home is their primary learning environment. A healthy and supportive home will help your child develop good relationship skills. You can use two strategies at home to foster your child’s relationship skills. These are just two strategies that you can do at home. There are other simple activities that you can also do, such as taking a moment to check in with them and see how they are doing, giving them your full attention by blocking out time each day, or acknowledging their feeling when they are sharing something to you. Cultivating your child’s relationship skills will help them construct meaningful and positive connections with others. Establishing connections and fostering healthy relationships is crucial, as relationships play a vital role in our feelings of belonging and overall happiness. Next week, Ms. Tania will share about the last SEL competencies. Stay tuned! Written by: Ms. Pom (Learning Support Teacher - pomposa.canlas@sph.ac.id)

  • 2023 Whole School Thanksgiving Project

We are thrilled to announce our upcoming 2023 Thanksgiving theme, "Gratitude in Action" with the bible verse from Colossians 3:17. Leading up to our Whole School Thanksgiving Lunch, in the spirit of thankfulness, we have asked the teachers to help guide students in a meaningful activity to express gratitude by writing something they are thankful for on a piece of paper leaf (we will provide the sheets) during homeroom morning devotion, fostering a moment of reflection and appreciation. 🍁🍂Our collective gratitude paper leaves will be put together, creating a beautiful tapestry of gratitude to be used as our photo backdrop capturing the essence of unity and thankfulness. Each of the approximately 700 leaves symbolize the diverse and shared blessings within our school community. 📸 We hope that as we stand together for group photos in front of our meaningful Thanksgiving Wall of Gratitude Backdrop, it will be a reminder of the strength and warmth of our SPH KV family. ❤️🧡💛 Let us embrace the spirit of gratitude in action as we continue to serve and bless each other.

  • Road to Social Awareness

We talked about the importance of Self-Management last week. It's a great step toward developing self-understanding, self-reflection, and emotional self-control. This takes us to the subject of Social Awareness, which is our next topic. Our aim is to discover how we may assist our children in acquiring the social awareness skills they need to succeed in their interpersonal relationships. What is Social Awareness? Social Awareness is the capacity to see things from other people's perspectives and feel empathy for them, especially those with different origins and cultures. It's the ability to identify resources and supports from the community, school, and family as well as comprehend social and ethical norms for behavior. Social awareness is the ability to sympathetically take into account the viewpoints of individuals in one's immediate vicinity and use that understanding to inform one's speech and behavior when in a particular social setting. Examples of being socially-aware: I can be friends with someone who doesn’t look or act like me. All skin colors are beautiful. Pink isn’t just for girls. I can have empathy for a student with a disability. My experience isn’t the only one. Why is Social Awareness Important? Social awareness is a crucial place to start for the enormous amount of work that has to be done, even though there is no immediate solution for bias, prejudice, and overt hate. The foundations of social justice include acknowledging diversity, respecting individual differences, understanding how one's actions impact other people, and lending a helping hand to those who are mistreated. Those abilities can be the foundation of a social justice campaign. It helps them see the world from many angles and teaches them how to get along with a wide range of people. It starts at home! Practices to Strengthen Social Awareness at HOME: 1. Educate yourself and your child Read books to your children that feature characters from a variety of backgrounds. It is important for students to perceive both themselves and individuals who are different from them in literature in order to foster empathy and consider many viewpoints. 2. Practice and Model Empathy and Compassion Respect and kindness are immensely aided by compassion. We get patience from it as well. Imagine a moment when you were frustrated with your child; it's common to grow irritated with them. Still, empathy allows us to remember what motivates them and show them kindness. Like, "Yeah, they are going through (fill in the blank), which makes sense for why they are acting this way. So that things work out well for us, I'll make sure to (fill in the blank).” 3. Build Respect It's critical to treat your kids with respect in addition to expecting them to do the same. Children who witness their parents treating them with respect are likely to feel appreciated and to reciprocate that regard. It's possible that you'll find a home where everyone values one another once respect has been built. You'll be able to coexist more amicably by sharing ideas, settling problems, and making decisions together. 4. Narrate Social Stories! Utilize social narratives to explain the societal obligations. You and your child can talk about how to be sympathetic to various situations. You can make your own to suit your child better, or you can try these ideas: Your classmate was called an inappropriate name based on their skin color. What will you do? A classmate that has a physical disability is always picked last to play kickball at recess. Is it fair? During group time, you think only boys can be the team leader and not girls. Is this okay? For more strategies and ideas at home, you can also check this link: https://www.rethinkcare.com/resources/how-parents-can-boost-social-and-emotional-learning-at-home/ As your child grows, Social Awareness matter. These skills will impact relationships and success in school, and various groups/activities along the way. Social-awareness is a teachable concept, and when taught at home, your children can start leaving their positive mark on their world! One of our learning support teachers will explain another SEL competency— Relationship Skill—in next week's article. Stay tuned!
